Mr. B. A. Hewett,
Chairman,
Hongkong General Chamber of Commerce,
Dear Sir,
We have the honour to enclose herewith copy
of a letter addressed by us to H. B. M. Consul-General at Canton in regard to the levying of the new tax there, also a translation of a letter from the local opium xkuxxx dealers dated yesterday, from which you will observe that our trade is so seriously affected, that unless some energetic steps are taken, we shall have to suffer enormous losses.
As it is, since the promulgation of the first proclamation, business in opium has entirely stopped, while deliveries have fallen off EKUSKELE considerably and as we pointed out in our letter to Mr. Jamieson, shipments to Canton and neighbourhood have dropped from an average of 40 chests to under 10 chests per day. Unless the uncertainty now prevailing with regard to this tax is removed, we are afraid that this state of affairs will continue, and we trust that the Chamber with its usual promptitude will take such steps as it may consider necessary for the protection of our trade.
We take this opportunity to thank you for the prompt manner in which you responded to our last communicat-
-tion on this subject.
We have etc..
